Kitchen Design tips
What is the first thing we say about the kitchen, it is the heart of the house, although kitchens in our tradition somewhat used to be a closed and secluded place, in the modern life this doesn’t work, as much as you socialize with your guests and friends while prepping some food, or cook while kids are following you around in the kitchen or might even be watching a movie while cooking, the kitchen is now a necessity in the heart of the house, and I believe that this is the main reason American kitchens where developed the way they were open and connected to the living room.
New technology has allowed us to do that as well the way developed hoods are strong and quiet enough to remove smell, silent quiet dishwashers, and these technicalities allowed us to invite the kitchen to be an open exposed space that is very active.
Although not all kitchens are open to the living, all new modern kitchens need to be a hub for activities, kids following their mothers in the kitchen would entice us to make a children activity corner, painting and drawing, or seating with toys, and other options, the same seating area which can be an island with stool chairs can also be a space for work.
In the following points, let’s look at some of the pointers to look for in your kitchen design
Add as much working surfaces as possible and as much storage space as possible
There is never such thing as too many working surfaces just as there is never too many storage, unless you are a minimalist there is always more need for more storage, and the more the better, as for working spaces which might be best for messy cookers like myself, you will have better segregation of different flavors or different recipes cooked at the same time, for a dinner party you don’t want the dinner meal to overlap the dessert.
Create a useful layout of fridge to sink connection and cooker to sink connection, with a couple of paces and clear working surfaces in between.
in this picture, it would be a better option to have more space between fridge and cooker
Under cabinet lighting instead of only general lighting
The worst thing in a kitchen is a lighting that comes from behind while working, shadows will be created on your surface and disturb work, to avoid that use a weaker than usual general lighting and a stronger under cabinet lighting, if you have a large window with strong lighting you can skip the under cabinet lighting in that area.
Use smart storage
New technological and design features have allowed to customize and add smart designing options similar to a paper towel drawer or a vertical pan storage, these concepts will create faster and easier work environment in the kitchen.
Add lighting to an island
Lighting on the kitchen island is a must for functional and aesthetic reasons, if you are working in you island with the previously mentioned low general lighting you will need additional lighting on the island.
Note the two wall scones as an alternative to under cabinet lighting
Be timeless and functional
Not all kitchen styles are suitable for all times, and who wants to design a kitchen only to find it old and meaningless in a couple of years, go for a sophisticated timeless styles, simple lines and white colors are perfect, if you don’t prefer white dark and light grey will never go out of style.
The bellow picture is a layout of a simple very minimalistic kitchen, but to be realistic it is not functional to the extreme, and unless you are designing for a person who always eats out and barely cooks an egg, this kitchen is not functional for a family house.
I will always say add plants, anywhere everywhere in the house, you can never go wrong with adding plants, it always adds liveliness to the room, although I would advise to add floor plants rather than counter top plants.
